A while back, my friend John got the idea to send off a ton of lanterns on the Chinese New Year. So he jumped on ebay and bought 20 brightly colored chinese lanterns, then last night (Chinese new year), we all gathered at my house to build them and walked to an open field to let the lanterns fly. This proved to be more difficult than it seemed because the cold weather and wind prevented the lanterns from holding a lot of heat. But, we persisted and figured out that holding the lanterns close to the ground helped (and caused a couple of small grass fires). Chris got the first one in the air and everyone elses' lanterns soon followed. It was pretty sweet seeing a lantern leave your hands, travel up into the night sky, and become nothing more than a flickering star. Here are some visuals. The rest of the shots are from a house concert at John's place and some acrobatics in the sun.
